Frequent questions and answers about safe sleep

1. What blankets should I use for my baby?

If your baby is under 12 months old, never use a duvet or pillow. Prefer lightweight clothing and a baby sleepsuit or lightweight blankets that don’t exceed their shoulders. Place your baby at a “feet to foot” (their feet at bed foot edge) position so they don’t get tangled into blankets.

2. How many blankets does my baby need?

Depends on how hot their room is and how warm their blankets are. Nevertheless, to control whether your baby is too hot, check if they are sweaty by feeling the back of their neck or their belly. Don’t worry of your little one’s feet or hands are cold, it’ normal. In case your baby is too hot, remove one or more blankets (check our guide).

3. How hot should my baby’s room be?

Babies don’t need hot rooms. In fact, the ideal temperature is between 16-20°C. Heating throughout the night is rarely needed and babies should not sleep close to radiators or be exposed to direct sunlight.

4. What mattress should I use for my baby?

It is crucial that your baby’s mattress remains dry and clean. The ideal is to buy a new mattress for every new baby.

5. Can I sleep in the same bed as my baby?

The safest place for your baby to sleep in during the first six months is a crib/cot or cot-bed inside your bedroom.

6. Should my baby wear a sleepsuit?

Sleepsuits are ideal for little ones that tend to stay uncovered. Dress them in a bodysuit under their sleepsuit. Make sure the weight and size of their sleepsuit is appropriate for your little one. Summer and hot nights require 1 tog sleepsuits (20-23°C room temperature), while winter nights ask for 2.5 tog sleepsuits (16-20°C room temperature).
