Tips for New Parents

Helpful Advice

What should we know?

  • A newborn is completely dependent on their parents for everything.
  • Newborns have no control over their head and must always be properly supported.
  • Even at this early stage, babies are very observant and love looking at and studying familiar faces—especially during feeding time. By around 2 months old, they can recognize those familiar faces.
  • A newborn can focus on objects about 25 cm (10 inches) away.
  • Newborns spend most of their time sleeping—up to 16 hours a day.
  • The first smile typically appears between 4 and 8 weeks and is usually a response to hearing a familiar adult’s voice.
  • At around 4 to 6 weeks, babies can begin tummy time—lying on their stomachs for short periods. This helps strengthen their neck and back muscles, preparing them for future milestones like sitting and crawling.
  • Around 16 to 18 weeks, babies begin to develop better control over their body movements.
  • Babies develop gradually from head to toe.

Daily Life

What essentials are needed at this stage?

All product categories are important for newborn care, including nursery furniture, feeding, bath and travel equipment, clothing, and toys. Here's a detailed overview:

Toys

Up to around 3–4 months, babies have limited motor control and cannot yet grasp toys. However, toys are essential for healthy sensory development from the very beginning.

Newborns see only up to about 25 cm and cannot yet distinguish colors. Research shows that high-contrast toys—especially those in black and white—are best for stimulating their vision. Placing toys close to the baby helps them focus, encourages them to move their arms and legs, and supports their physical growth.

Ideal toys for this age include rattles, crib mobiles, and activity gyms.

Remember: newborns need your help to enjoy their toys and gain the full developmental benefits. Spend time with your baby and support them as they explore the world!

Clothing

Newborn clothes should be soft, comfortable, and easy to put on and take off—for the baby’s comfort and the parent’s convenience.

For everyday wear, the best options are bodysuits and sleepsuits—one-piece outfits that cover the baby’s tummy and back. Look for designs with envelope necklines (to avoid pressure on the baby’s head) and nickel-free snap buttons (safe for sensitive skin). Some pieces include color-coded snaps to help parents fasten them correctly. Others have built-in mittens to prevent babies from scratching their faces.

Nursery Equipment

Start with a bassinet, which is the ideal first bed for your newborn. Its compact size offers warmth and safety, and it can be placed right next to your bed for nighttime proximity. Many bassinets are height-adjustable to align with your bed, making nighttime feedings easier.

From around 6 months, transition your baby to a cot or convertible toddler bed, as they begin sitting up and need more space for safety.

If space allows, you may choose to start directly with a cot. In that case, consider adding a sleeping nest to create a more secure environment inside the larger sleeping space.

Feeding Equipment

After birth, you’ll decide whether to breastfeed or use formula. In either case, you’ll need a few bottles.
Even breastfeeding mothers should have some bottles on hand—for times when someone else is feeding the baby or if the mother needs to express milk due to nipple discomfort. Pair these with breastmilk storage bags for refrigeration and later bottle feeding.

Formula-fed babies will need around six small bottles, as newborns drink small amounts at a time. Avoid large bottles, as they may introduce too much air, increasing the risk of colic.

You may also need electric appliances like a sterilizer and bottle warmer. Visit our Buying Guide to find the right options for your needs.

A breast pump may also be useful, depending on your routine and preferences. Again, our Buying Guide can help you choose the model that suits you best.

Bath Equipment

To make bath time safe and enjoyable, you’ll need a baby bathtub and most importantly, a support base for the baby.

Support bases are suitable from birth to about 6 months—until your baby can sit up unaided. They help keep the baby at the correct angle and allow you to bathe them comfortably and safely, even when alone.

Choose from a variety of bathtubs in our collection, and don’t forget to add bath toys to turn washing into a fun bonding experience!

Travel Equipment

For trips outside the home, you’ll need a stroller and a car seat.

Visit our Buying Guide to explore your options and find what suits your lifestyle best.

First, decide whether you prefer to buy a travel system (stroller + car seat bundle) or separate components.
Travel systems offer the advantage of attaching the infant car seat (typically suitable for babies up to 75 cm tall) directly to the stroller frame. Alternatively, a standalone car seat may cover a broader height/age range (e.g., from newborn to 105 cm, or about 4 years old), though it may not be compatible with the stroller.
