Baby Steps | 6 months+
Baby Steps | 6 months+
At this stage, babies become more active and agile—they begin to sit up, crawl, and explore through play. They love making sounds and engaging with familiar adults, but they may also begin to show uncertainty around strangers.
What to Expect at This Stage:
- Your baby is likely settling into a more consistent daily routine.
- They're increasingly mobile and continue to explore everything by putting it in their mouth. Close supervision and a safe home environment are essential.
- Their vision has improved, and they now eagerly follow movement with their eyes and head.
- Most babies can sit up with support around 6 months, but they still need to be watched closely.
- This is a wonderful time to introduce simple picture books and story time. Babies enjoy being read to and can now distinguish colors more clearly.
- They love banging objects together or transferring them from one hand to the other—offer small toys that fit in their hands to encourage this development.
- Toys that make noise are especially exciting at this stage.
- Babies respond well to sing-song voices and higher-pitched tones. This kind of communication supports early language development. Even if they can’t speak yet, they’re learning the basics of conversation: taking turns, maintaining eye contact, and listening.
- Teething may begin during this period.
- Your baby has likely developed a strong attachment to parents or caregivers and may feel anxious if separated from them or when strangers are near.
- Solid food is typically introduced now. Establishing healthy eating habits is important—for your baby and the whole family.
- Your little one may start to hold their own cup, feed themselves with their fingers, and even attempt to use a spoon.
- Parents may now begin to take their babies swimming, to baby yoga classes, playgroups, or soft play areas.
Essentials for This Stage:
- Safety Gear: Baby gates, outlet covers, and other safety products help your little one explore freely and securely.
- Bath Equipment: As your baby begins to sit with support, it’s time to transition from infant bath supports to larger baby baths or bath seats with back support. Non-slip mats are also recommended.
- Feeding Supplies: Highchair, baby bowls, bibs, soft spoons, food containers, thermal jars, a steamer/blender, and beginner training cups are great additions to your kitchen.
- Car Seats: Around this age, some parents consider transitioning to forward-facing car seats (suitable for children approximately 85 cm tall), but the decision depends on your current seat. Rear-facing seats are still the safest option and are recommended for as long as possible—ideally up to 105 cm (around age 4)—to protect the child’s head and neck.
- Teething Accessories: Teething toys and extra bibs are essential for drooling and feeding.
- Play Yard: A foldable playpen offers a safe, enclosed space for your baby to play or nap during the day.
- Clothing: Opt for practical, durable outfits suitable for increased mobility like crawling.
- Toys: Choose musical toys, baby-safe mirrors, activity toys, stacking cups or soft blocks, textured books, simple picture books, and everyday-themed toys like animals or household items. Music for home or car rides is also a great addition.
