Your Pregnancy Week by Week
3rd Trimester: Pregnancy Week 36

Welcome to the world of parenting!

An exciting journey is about to start and Mothercare, through this journal, is going to be by your side and advise you throughout your pregnancy weeks.

Get informed about everything that parents need to know such as pregnancy, baby growth, body and psychology changes, doctor examinations and appointments and of course parturition, breastfeeding and baby care.

Our midwife and lactation consultant IBCLC Ms Georgia Leze every week is going to show you a special path to a healthy and happy baby.

Pregnancy Week 36

Things are really happening now! At 36 weeks pregnant you can expect your baby to wriggle into the right position for delivery, which is not only exciting but also a bit comfier on your tummy. You may be on maternity leave and finally have time to prepare for your new arrival – as well as enjoying plenty of rest.

Spent quality time with your partner and baby. Prepare the nursery, find the right Playlist with lullabies and talk to your baby every day. Learn about motherhood and the needs of a newborn.

For many parents-to-be, this is the time to start thinking of a few baby essentials. Here are some items it’s good to have ready:

  • an infant car seat, for that important first car journey home
  • a moses basket, which can be more reassuring for sleepy little ones than a big cot
  • sleepsuits, vests and nappies – your baby will love feeling warm and snug!

Your baby may be changing position now, as they get ready for the big day. They will 'engage', which means that they move a bit lower, with their heads downwards. You can sometimes tell this by looking at yourself sideways in the mirror and seeing that your bump has dropped – one of the possible pregnancy symptoms of week 36. Walking may be a bit trickier now, as there is more pressure on your pelvis. However, this new position makes breathing and eating more comfortable again, which feels wonderful! Time for action! Do regular daily yoga exercises for pregnant women and give birth to your baby more painless and faster! Yoga is for all mommies, an easy exercise to start or continue in pregnancy and will help you reduce all possible discomfort and consolidate your baby! The moment of labour is the key to your most positive experience!

Your baby is about 47cm long, and weighs around 2.7kg. Their immune system and blood circulatory systems are now ready for the outside world, although ideally, a bit more weight would be nice. Your little one now has less room to move, but if you notice a period with no movement or your baby’s normal movement pattern changes, get in touch with your doctor or midwife so they can check all is well.

Τhings to do in Pregnancy Week 36

This week you will have again an appointment with your doctor or midwife. In this standard test you will check again your own health and your baby’s development and you will be given the last laboratory blood test, urine and vaginal cultivation tests.

At this stage of pregnancy your doctor or midwife recommends a cardiotocogram, a 30-minute ultrasound examination that listens and records your baby’s heart rate, while comparing it to your potential contractions. This way we know if your baby is still happy in your tummy or not. This test is not necessary but is often recommended by your doctor or midwife.

For many mums-to-be, this is the time that maternity leave starts. Treat the next month or so as a break, and use the time to have plenty of rest. Now you’re no longer juggling work with baby preparation, it’s a great opportunity to start getting your baby’s things together. You finally have time to stock up on items you’ll need soon, like nursing bras and tops. Keep in touch with friends and colleagues, because maternity leave can feel a little odd at first, especially if you’re used to a busy environment. Plan plenty of café dates or gentle walks together.
